Gradual acceptance of small area apartments are increasing with the rapid development of social economy, industry of science and technology, besides the propelling forces from the high-priced buildings. Diversified demands hereafter appear due to the residents need for their unit space functions. The concept of traditional single function residential apartments and commercial type apartment has lagged behind and the boundaries are increasingly blurred. More complicated state of combination of commercial/residential apartments has shown up, that is called commercial/residential mixed use apartments. The author focuses on the mode and its problems, and explores the corresponding solutions. This paper describes the research background and its significance in the first place, pointing out three main problems in the ‘commercial/residential mixed use apartments’. The poor adaptability of unit space for living and working mode;overlapping of public traffic space for residence and office streamline; the cramped ignorance of the shortage of communication space. Then the paper determines the research methods and goals, and constructs the research methodology. After the analysis of related concepts, the definition of ‘commercial/residential mixed use apartment’ is defined, with analysis of its causes and existing reasons, and the classification to the layout of the building model. Then factors affecting the spatial ambiguity are interpreted, as well as the internal characteristics of the residents composition, their demand, main occupations and behavior patterns. On this basis, starting with the problems in the dual-use commercial and residential apartments in the unit space and public space, the paper aims to solve the problems with introduction the polysemy space theory which includes two parts: dynamic function view that is, the space can be conveniently and effectively changed into the potential functions, and composite function which means a space at the same time has a variety of functional meaning. Taking the principles and strategies of dynamic function view as a guide, the author proposes various design strategies for the adaptability problem from; then follows the principles and strategies in complex function view, trying to offer a solution to alleviate the public traffic space cramped problem; lastly, focuses on the problem of the lack of public space for communication space, the effect of various design strategies in organic, the specific location may occur during the communication activities in the commercial and residential apartments, providingwith excellent design case as a proof of appropriate strategies.
