China is a mountainous country, the terrain in mountain area is steep, and the geological conditions are complex. Coupled with the level of economic development constraints, the technical level of mountainous highway construction was low in the past years. Unreasonable highway roadside safety design is common, and the problem of the lack the safety facilities is serious. Roadside safety of mountainous highway has become the focus of traffic safety remediation, good roadside design has become one of the important measures to ensure traffic safety.Through a statistical analysis of the historical data of highway roadside accident, get the basic characteristics of mountainous highway roadside accidents, mainly includes the blackspots of accidents, accident forms, accident vehicle. On the foundation of the historical data of highway roadside accident, form the point of view of traffic system. And then analyze the four main factors which influence the roadside safety most: human, vehicle, road condition and bad weather. The analysis of influence factors is helpful for us to grasp the main problem of the roadside safety research, and to provide the direction for roadside safety rectification work.Traditional roadside safety design mainly focused on the terrain geology and highway alignment design requirements more than human and ecological considerations. Therefore, by studying the spirit of "people-oriented, safety first, respect for nature" principle, puts forward three roadside safety design concept: the concept of tolerance, the flexible design concept, the concept of harmony. It provides the basic theory for roadside safety design.According to the existing problems of highway roadside safety, put forward three stage strategy for roadside safety technology: active prevention, preventional strategies of rollovers and collision accidents, passive protection. Then, three new concepts are applied in practice to put forward roadside safety design methods and improvement measures adapted to the three stage strategy, and also expounds the key points of the implementation of various measures. Finally, draw some conclusions and give some foresights.The above research results has a certain reference value to enrich the roadside safety design theory and the guidance of roadside safety rectification work.
