As the fast social development and economic growth, power demand increases rapidly. Therefore it is urgent to develop power grid with high reliability. Meanwhile, as the advance of urbanization in China, different functional urban areas such as commercial area, industrial area, and residential area form and develop very fast, and their demand for power grid with high reliability becomes urgent. In this work, research on high reliability power supply mode for different functional urban areas of large cities is conducted. It will be of significant practical meanings for the development of large cities in China.Firstly, the functional areas of large cities are categorized and their properties are distinguished. Furthermore, their influence on power supply mode planning are pointed out for the further development of high reliability power supply mode based on properties of functional areas.Then the methods for the evaluation of power grid reliability are introduced. The GO method, which is a reliability assessment commonly used in the petrochemical industry and machinery manufacturing, is modefied and applied to the evaluation of distribution network reliability in this work. The improved clustering load model based on the golden section optimum seeking method is proposed to account for the influence of variation of grid load on distribution network reliability and ensure the required high precision. Thus the influence of the load characteristics in different functional urban areas on reliability of different connection types is investigated.Finally, high reliability power supply modes for different functional urban areas of large cities are determined from three aspects: connection types, relabilty of equipments and Distribution Automation. Firstly, commonly used highly relable connection types in the power grid are summeried. Moreover, a new connection type is proposed through analysis and computation. Futhermore, the influence of relabilty of equipments and Distribution Automation on relability evaluation are investigated preliminarily considering the current status and future development of power ditribution grid in large cities. Finally, through the determination of reliability index of power supply modes, a database containing high reliability power supply modes for different functional urban areas of large cities is developed to provide reference for urban power grid planners.
