A Study On The Integration Of Urban Culture And Urban Design

Urban culture plays an important role on the urban construction and development. However in the current, the study of urban culture is relatively lack on the practice of urban design. It is also lack of enough attention for the cultural coupling in the design. Based on the defining of city culture and city design, this article attempts to make a systematically study on the integration of urban Culture and Urban Design, and tries to summarized the general methods of the integration. This paper spreads out discussion for the proposition of "the integration of urban culture and urban design", by following the problem-oriented logic thread of "what-why-how". The first part is about "what", through defining core concepts to interpret the proposition. In the second part, we structure the livability objectives-oriented model to demonstrate the necessity of the coupling between urban culture and urban design, and that is explaining "why". It is the third part that tries to answer the question of "how". We employ various methods including classic case method and theoretical analysis, and finally explore the innovation path to integrate urban culture and urban design.In the first part, preliminary interpretation consists of definition of three core concepts-"urban culture", " urban design " and " integration ", based on review and comment of related theories. The meaning of "urban culture" in this paper mainly includes two aspects of material space carrier and non-material cultural connotation. From the perspective of cultural development, urban culture can also be divided into two types of original culture and newly-born culture, playing different roles in city development of old town and new town. This paper suggests that the connotation and function of urban design is to guide and control the construction of urban spatial shape, and to arrange urban activities. Urban design, characterized by universality and comprehensiveness, gains a foothold with the idea of "putting people first", and is judged by the criteria of aesthetic values. It synthesizes all kinds of social, economic, spatial and cultural elements influencing urban development. The integration of urban culture and urban design has two aspects of connotation as well:urban culture fits into urban design, and urban design reveals and furthermore gives birth to urban culture. The implementation process of integration is the one of path innovation to urban design on the basis of culture strategy.In the second part, we structure the livability objectives-oriented model to demonstrate the necessity of the integration of urban culture and urban design. First, goal-oriented factors-the characterization system of urban livability are analyzed and deconstructed into three indexes of environment satisfaction, activity demand satisfaction and civilization satisfaction from people’s needs feeling, and the three indexes contain several sub-indexes. It elaborates on the rationality comparing with Scientific Evaluation Criteria of Livable City of China. Second, we analyze the characteristic and limitation of the mechanism that urban design and urban culture respectively improve urban livability. The two show different direct, indirect or no obvious effect according to different sub-indexes of urban livability. The effect can hardly be compressive and unlimited, when the two function independently. Then, it is the integration of the two promoting urban livability to be analyzed. From the perspective of function mechanism, the two are mutually supplementary, and overcoming the limitation of each other; the integration of them have a direct effect on the nine sub-indexes of urban livability. From the perspective of function effect, the integration of the two has far greater effect than the two separately. Therefore, the integration of urban culture and urban design leads to more effective promotion of urban livability, and that is proved to be necessary.In the third part, starting from the summarizing practice experience, through the analysis of four typical cases, the experience can be made use of and the existing problems and limitations can be on the in-depth analysis. The urban space, urban functions and urban activity are the integrated points of urban culture and urban design. Starting from the three integrated points, combining with the experience of traditional urban design, the paper put forward the integrated path, which mainly includes the status quo analysis and judgment of the cultural resources, urban function design based on the strategy of cultural integration, urban space design and urban activities design. The concept transformation is asked for policymakers and the city planning designers, who can avoid chief "will" and "elite limited", sets up the cultural awareness, attention and enhance the understanding of culture, change their role in the urban cultural construction work. On institutional guarantee, the author puts forward two suggestions, one is the cultural content of the institutionalization in the urban design, the second is the implementation evaluation of urban culture as a new measure.The whole thesis contains about 45000 words,43 diagrams and charts.
