Residential district is a basic composition of city, whose stability and unity affect the development of a harmonious society. However, in these days, the relationships between neighbors are ubiquitously indifferent and lack sense of belongings. Such kind of problem is mainly due to the shortage of trust and communications. Therefore, the key solution is to solve the communication problems. In architecture, how to solve this problem depends on the design of residential interaction space. The thesis starts with two parts:the behavior of residents and external interaction space, and discuss the connection between them. The research takes three residential areas in Hefei constructed in different times, different sizes of population and space as examples, with using methods of taking spot pictures, making graphic records, and combine both domestic and international historical research, to investigate the residents with various ages, degree of density and behaviors, etc. Furthermore, the author analyzes three external interaction space through the methods of principal component analysis and cluster analysis. Moreover, with method of quantization, the author compares different areas with residents’quantities, to identify the connection degree between the interaction space and residential interactions. Finally there come the results of the research:1. There are four characters of external interaction spaces affecting the residential behavior:Privacy, Interest, openness and accessibility; 2.through methods of principal component analysis and cluster analysis, three residential areas are divided into eleven types, each of which coincides the spaces with human behaviors, therefore draw a conclusion on the connection between human behavior and interaction space; 3. Using the results of this research to put forward some design methods to ameliorate the interaction environment and increase the frequency of interactions between neighborsThis thesis is based on practice, combined with qualitative and quantitative methods, to conclude a connection between residents and interaction spaces, and to provide a theoretical basis for future research, and also for the design of future residential behavior.
