According to the requirements and planning for smart grid construction of the State Grid Corporation, the intelligentization of traditional hydropower plant will be an inevitable trend and a new target to meet the demands of the comprehensive development of the new grid. With the start of the development strategy for smart grid, as an important part of the smart grid power generation link, it has become a general trend to construct and reform the intelligent hydropower plant and match the national strategy of the smart grid construction since the requirements of production management and automation level of the hydropower plant were further improved. This move would be much more significant to improve the level of the construction and operation of the hydropower industry.Firstly, the situation of the current domestic and abroad intelligent hydropower station has been analyzed in the paper, the gap between the traditional hydropower station and the intelligent hydropower station is compared. There are weaknesses in domestic hydropower station.Secondly, a three-layer and two-network model of the intelligent hydropower plant based on a pumped storage power station has been built, this pumped storage power station has two units with each 150MW capacity. The intelligentization should be implemented in phases, such as the process layer intelligent terminal, merge unit, spacer layer device etc. At this stage complete process layer network structures, the merging unit and intelligent terminal.Finally, a detailed design has been proposed, which including design, secondary equipment group solutions and secondary system security protection that based on the intelligentization of a pumped storage power plant. The intelligentization of switch station is recommended to complete during the intelligentization of conventional hydropower. To complete the intelligentization of hydropower on the condition that is not replaced. Generator protection devices (double) and the monitoring device (single) are configured to achieve protection and controlment. In order to meet requirements of intelligent and reliability, intelligent terminals that should be configured as well. As the station is operating, there are three programs that should be designed for the intelligent switching equipment configuration. According to the current situation, it is very difficult to install sensors inside original switch, and it is difficult to ensure the reliability of the installation sensor switch. Based on the above analysis, this research suggested that the former program is much appropriate.
