The development of automatic control technologies in power system and the expansion scale of power system put forward higher requirements on clock synchronization of power plants, substations and power dispatching department. In the actual production of power sysytem, due to huge transmission of information and the frequent change of stste variables betweent electricity generation, transmission, substation and distribution, only to meet some precision degree of clock synchronization can we meet the requirements of safe, reliable and stable operation of the power system. Therefore, in order to adapt to the development of the electric power industry and to meet the stable operation of power grids as well as to improve the control ability and the ability of fault analysis of power system, we must provide the uniform network clock to collaborative system of each link department in time to keep the same precise. The occurrence of IEEE 1588 precision time synchronization with its high accuracy and low cost provides a feasible measure to meet the precision time synchronization of internal power system.Firstly, this paper introduces the basic concepts of time synchronization and the development of this new technology, then this paper gives a detailed analysis and researches of the principle, function, model of the PTP clock synchronization in power system. Based on the comparative analysis of the existing clock synchronization technology, this paper gives the presence advantage of the IEEE 1588 pecision time protocol and the results that this protocol has the ability of solving the problem of accuracy of network clock. The study in this paper shows that the time synchronization scheme based on the IEEE1588 time synchronization protocol can not only greatly improve the time synchronization precision between the electrical equipments within the power system, and ensure the accuracy of parameter calibration and fault location in power system, and improve the centralized control management level and capability of stable control, but also make the adjustment and transformation of time basere of each part of the system become more easily. The technology of IEEE1588 pecision time protocol has some characteristic such as high precision, easy operation, economy and so on, it can solve well the problem that the accuracy of the clock synchronization of the current power is not high enough, and has a great application value for the future development of smart grid.
