In this paper, I analyze and evaluate the the application of lightning arrester installing on 500 kV transmission line, the focus is on introducing and researching the advantages and disadvantages of 500 kV transmission line lightning arrester.500 kV transmission line lightning arrester is used to protect the ac power system electrical equipment from the damage of atmospheric overvoltage and operating over-voltage, which is currently the most advanced protector. Due to its core component is made formthe metal oxide resistors which have excellent volt-amper characteristics and steep wave response characteristics,compared with the traditional silicon carbide arrester,It improves the volt-ampere characteristic of the arrester and the ability of overvoltage on flow, which results in the fundamental change of lightning arrester’s characteristics. What’s more, because the high gradient zno resistors have characteristics of good non-linear characteristics, large flow, low level of residual voltage, fast response time,nostream,etc, high potential gradient zno resistors in the application of line lightning arrester reduce unit high number of resistors, so that the volume and weight of the line arrester can be abated,which is conducive to its installation in the line.In this paper, I detailed analyzed the effect, the actual usage, installation and maintenance, and the problems in practice and the solution of the high gradient zinc oxide lightning arrester in the practical application of super-high voltage transmission line. At the same time, I analyzes the background of EHV transmission line suffering lightning strike, and the measures and the corresponding advantages and disadvantages of lightning protection of transmission line. Then we can further guide the installation and maintenance of 500 kV transmission line lightning arrester.
