Shipbuilding industry which is known as the strategic industry of our country, becomes more and more important for the stable development of energy and economy. Cycloidal propeller is a kind of ship driving device, which can provide thrust for ship in any directions without changing the speed. Cycloidal propeller is widely used in harbors all over the world because of its excellent control performance.However, the technology of Cycloidal propeller is almost monopolized by foreigners. Taking some research on it to break the monopoly as well as promote the technology development is urgent needed. In this paper, firstly analyzed the basic principles of cycloidal propeller, designed a new prototype of cycloidal propeller, and finally test its performance with Software and experiment. Based on the new prototype of cycloidal propeller, a new control system which could control the thrust of cycloidal propeller and make on-line condition inspection at the same time was developed. In order to test the hydrodynamic performance of this new type of cycloidal propeller and prove the its practicability, a new test system based on LMS was designed and manufactured which could not only measure the thrust and torque during the exercise, but also analysis some key parameters’influence to its hydrodynamic performance.The main research work of this paper are as follows:1. Considering the basic concept of cycloidal propeller and its development situation, summarized the background and significance of the research on cycloidal propeller, analyzed its present research situation and development trend in the shipping industry, air industry and energy fields. Finally, analyzed the existing problem in current cycloidal propeller.2. Analyzed the operational principle of cycloidal propeller, built the mathematical model of cycloidal propeller, defined its hydrodynamic performance parameters, and finally researched the blade swing rules and the influence of hydrodynamic parameters for cycloidal propeller, derived the formulas of thrust coefficient, torque coefficient and so on.3. Comparing with existing cycloidal propellers, gave out the structure design proposal of new type cycloidal propeller and its key components details, validated the core components’ safety performance, finally finished the manufacture,debugging work.4. Designed the key components details for the control system and analyzed the control algorithm which is needed in our control system. Finally, according to the design plans developed a double steering engine control system.5. Finished an experiment system for cycloidal propeller based on LMS, tested the key parameters’influence for the hydrodynamic performance of cycloidal propeller to validate the rationality and validity of the cycloidal propeller’s software/hardware system.
