Cycloidal propeller can adjust the direction and magnitude of thrust rapidly and step-less, which possesses excellent manoeuvrability, compared to other marine propulsions. As an excellent performance propeller, it has been widely used in tug, minesweeper, dynamic positioning, floating crane.With the development of China’s marine economy and the shipping industry, the vessels equipped with a high-performance powertrain are required much. Therefore,the ship based on cycloidal propeller has a huge application market in China, and it also can enhance the core competitiveness of China’s shipbuilding industry and accelerate the technological capability of shipping industry.In this paper, the existing cycloidal propeller’s limitations of the theoretical methods and the deficiencies in practical applications have been considered. This thesis designed and manufactured the prototype of a new cycloidal propeller based on the steering engine, for the purpose of efficient, reliable technology and industrialization. Carried out the unmanned surface vehicle equipped with this cycloidal propeller.The main study works and chapter arrangement of this paper are as follow:In Chapter1:presented the basic concepts of cycloidal propeller and the importance of cycloidal propeller study. Discussed cycloidal propellers’application in navigation devices, aircraft and energy. Raised the prospect applications and significance of the cycloidal propeller in the field of unmanned boat. Finally, carried out main research work and general frame of this paper.In Chapter2:introduced cycloidal propeller’s working principle. Studied the rule of cycloidal propeller blade’s oscillating movement, and then established control model on cycloidal propeller. Focused on the research of cycloidal propeller’s hydrodynamic performance and obtained computational formula of thrust coefficient, torque coefficient and propulsion efficiency.In Chapter3:summarized analysis of the traditional cycloidal propeller’s structure. Then put forward structural design of cycloidal propeller based on stepper engine. Put forward its control system works, checked its parts including AC servo motor, sealing performance.etc.In Chapter4:applied an unmanned surface vehicle(USV) base on the work in previous, and developed a software for it. Carried out the hardware and software systems to achieve the remote control of the USV. including the GPS positioning and navigation.In Chapter5:Carried out the experiments of USV in lake to test the feasibility and reliability of hardware and software system. Tested its excellent manoeuvrability and get the relevant experimental parameters.In Chapter6:the conclusions are presented and some advanced topics in the proposed methodology that needs further investigation in future are presented and addressed.
