The historical private mansion as the bearer of a piece of history, has reflected the cultural tastes and ethics of ancient masters and gentry class, and also recorded the historical vicissitudes of the past. In recent years, with the continuous progress and the development of social economy and culture, the protection awareness of the ancient buildings and cultural relics has strengthened, at the same time more and more attention is being paid to the work of cultural relic protection and restoration.The protection and renovation project of provincial governor Hu Pinzhi’s Guanting of Late Qing Dynasty(Hu family’Garden, Hubei Province, Tianmen, The following is called The provincial governor Hu’s Guanting) is a meaningful practice on the protection and renovation of historical house. The provincial governor Hu’s Guanting is the former residence of the Shanxi provincial governor Hu Pinzhi in Late Qing.Due to the distinctive features and unique historical significance, and the profound cultural, artistic, technical value, it is indeed a reflection of rich cultural connotation and deep historical details from a city and even more areas. Nowadays, the protection of cultural heritage has attracted domestic and international attention from all sectors of society, therefore, not only historical buildings and landscape itself is worth being explored and researched, how to mining the potential relationship and value between historical building landscape and the social economy development is also worth deep thinking.It is not difficult to find that,the provincial governor Hu Pinzhi’s Guanting protection and renovation project plays an important role in both developing city culture, promoting city image and driving local economic development. The provincial governor Hu’s Guanting as a garden-style mansion has lost its original landscape because of longtime disrepair, and much man-made destruction. Also with its special structure in architectural part of traditional brick and wood,it is of great luck to complete the comprehensive restoration, which is an important exploration and precious experience wealth of Chinese traditional wooden structure building protection and repair.This paper explains the basic concepts and values of historical private mansions and gardens, and describes the process of the development of domestic and foreign historical heritage protection.In association with the current ideas of domestic and foreign cultural relics protection and renovation, basic originality principles in repair design and construction, this paper has analyzed the current situation and value of the provincial governor Hu’s Guanting, combined with related repair experience of traditional architecture.It further discusses several cautions,specific measures and related technical problems of the design and renovation project, and how to make the historical information and architectural technology, art value, etc of the provincial governor Hu’s Guanting to preserve. At the same time, through the research on the problems of protection and repair of the provincial governor Hu’s Guanting,this paper is trying to summarize the success key factors and experiences in the repair process, searching for new values for the protection and restoration of the private mansions,which will play the role of city historical context accumulation and inheritance.
