Research Of The Design Of Steps In Urban Public Spaces

As the birth of buildings & cities, step is playing a significant role in urban public space. It can be used in settling of urban public spaces, atmosphere creating & vigorous promoting. According to the requirements of accessibility, participation, and the perspective of aesthetics, optimizing the steps space in landscape design is very meaningful to stimulate the vitality of urban public space and improve the quality of space art.This report starts with the research of steps, it explained the basic information about steps in first part. After that, this report identified different kinds of steps using in urban public spaces, include the basic ways of steps using, the locations for steps settling, different functions and different shapes and edges of steps. Then, this report stated the data from a research about the manifestation of steps. Which can be referenced in design of future steps. It is clear that the function and feature of steps will be developed with the urban developing.The main research results of this thesis are following:(1) The steps in the urban public space can be regular or irregular shapes, steps can be divided into different kinds by materials such as stone, wood, metal, glass and so on. The space has concave and convex, set-up and surround close formations. There are three structure types:solid base type, cantilever type and overhead; The lines, faces, bodies are the basic application ways, they are widely used in the city streets, squares, commercial recreational area, urban parks and other places; The function of the steps in urban public spaces can contact and direct traffic and form space, it can also be as a transition space, an informal rest space and the performance space to solve the problems of height and direct the sight;(2) The steps of urban public spaces should be based on its safety, convenient, scale, function of human nature and human body engineering and structure engineering modular principle; And to make multivariate linear combination, free changing and form the cutting edge shapes of space; we should design comprehensively in the scale, color and accessibility of steps;(3) The steps in urban public spaces designed in terms of artistic features, the pursuit of beautiful things for people and the application of humanistic art show to make the steps in shape and color, light and shade, texture and texture of the artistic effect; And formed by communication space, play space and exhibition space in urban public space, considering the steps from the macro and plant, water, topography and the combination of sketch sculpture.(4) Combined with the actual case to design steps, further expounds the steps in the form of each function in urban public spaces, the material of the steps and the ways of general layout, combined in the stone, brick, wood and concrete to form a whole space, reflecting the necessity of the steps in the urban public space again.
