Air cooling technology for power plants, which has a significant water-saving benefit, has gained a prosperous development in the regions where is rich in coal but short of water. The meteorological conditions, especially wind direction, wind velocity and air temperature have large impacts on the thermodynamic performance of air-cooling system when using environmental air as the heat sink of exhaust heat of turbine. In the higher latitudes of China, finned tubes faces severe risk of freezing in cold winter, which challengs the safe and economic operation of the power plant with direct air-cooling system. Thus it is important to develop the antifreezing technologies and make up relavant measurements in extreme cold areas. This paper introduced the heat exchange priciple of the two air-cooling systems, summarized the reasons of the freezing phenomenon combined with the practical operations in power plants, and provided antifreezing measurements from the prospects of designing, operaing, automation and equipment selection for the air-cooling systems. Based on the theoretical knowledge and research in author’s own experience at work, some technological have been proposed. We hope these methods could provide a basis for the design and solution of antifreezing of thermal power plants.
