Lightning is the main reason that endangers transmission line working safety and reliability today. Equipments are damaged by lightning accidents, lightning accidents cause large area bleak out, even personal injury at serous situation, bring large losses to industrial and agricultural production, bring inconvenience to people’s life and work, so the current state of lightning protection should be study and find measures to improve level of lightning protection, reduce lightning trip-out rate and damage rate of distribution equipments, it has the vital significance to ensure unblocked of business electrical, safe and reliable operation of distribution network.In this paper, study to the transmission calculation method of lightning overvoltage on transmission line, including transmission line overvoltage calculation in no induction thunder lightning line conditions and lightning, and this paper gives the calculation method of lightning trip out rate of transmission line. On this basis, the existing common measures of lightning protection of transmission lines, including the line route selection, lightning line design, installation of automatic reclosing device, equipment and reasonable optimization of transmission line. Combined with the status of yuanping area, Put forward the general 110kV yuanping transmission line lightning protection measures are in line operation problems, analysis of the influence on the lightning performance before and after using the line arrester. At the same time, through the analysis of electrical geometry model validation to improve the line arrester on 110kV yuanping transmission line the lightning protection performance.Through the use of the line arrester on yuanping transmission line, yuanping transmission line no occurrence of lightning trip out accidents. This shows line arresters can improve level of lightning protection and reliable operation of transmission line.
