In this paper, the research object was the reliability of FSAE racing vehicle, the development situation of FSAE competition and the racing vehicle reliability research at home and abroad was introduced. The basic theory of reliability engineering was expounded, focused on the Fault Tree Analysis and the methods of reliability test.The structure of FSAE racing vehicle was introduced. A large amount of fault information was collected, and the reasons were analysed sequentially. Two fault trees were established, one about engine and electrical, and the other one about chassis and body. Then the fault trees were assessed, and applied to the diagnosis and analysis of common and integrated faults of engine.The reliability analysis was done on the frame of a racing vehicle with finite element software. Force of the frame in common working conditions was simulated, the strength and stiffness was analyzed. With modal analysis and collision analysis of the frame, the natural frequencies and energy change in the process of collision were calculated, and some suggestions were put forward.Based on fault trees and finite element analysis, combining with FSAE dynamics projects, a series of reliability tests were done on a FSAE racing vehicle. Not only including engine bench test, vehicle drum test, and tensile strength test of carbon fiber cross arm, three reliability tests indoor in total, but also three reliability tests on the road, under limit conditions, rapid conditions, and special environmental conditions. A variety of faults were found and solved in time applying fault trees, and the reliability of racing vehicle was improved.
