Oil crisis and environmental pollution are two serious issues in the world today. For traffic has consumes more than half of the overall consumption of oil, in addition, automobile exhaust is the main atmospheric pollution sources, thus, the traditional Auto industry is under attack and facing challenges. And the development of electric vehicle(EV) has become an historical opportunity for auto industry.As Electric vehicle have the features of portability, non-pollution and low-noise, it becomes an ideal vehicle. The key technologies of the EV including:motor drive technology, battery and its management technology, body structure optimization technology and so on. The motor drive system is the core of EV, and it relates to the overall performance of EV. Switched Reluctance Motor Drive system (SRD) is a new type of motor drive system. Compared with other conventional motor drive system, it has the advantages of simple structure, high reliability, and flexible control and so on. All of these characteristics determine that SRD is fit for the motor drive system of EV.The design of switched reluctance motor system is the core of the paper. Firstly, this paper introduced the current development of EV and the drive system in EV. Comparing with other driven systems, we analyzed the topology structure, working principle, operation characteristics of SRD and summarized the advantage and disadvantage of SRD in the paper. During this process, the basic theory of SRM and the basic method of finite element analysis were mainly analyzed. Based on the operation needs of EV and the electromagnetic field theory, we did in-depth research for the general structure, structure parameters and electromagnetic parameters of SRM. Then, we make calculation software about the parameters of the machine by VB language. We aslo calculate the structure parameters, electromagnetic parameters of SRM. At the same time, we make optimal design for the prototype with the calculation software and Ansoft RMxprt. And then, the paper set a2D FEA model for the machine with Ansoft Maxwell2D. After making static and dynamic analysis for the model, we got the magnetic field distribution and kinds of characteristic curve of motor. They verified the rationality of the design of the motor. In the end, we make a brief design for system control circuit. At the same time, we build the hardware circuit system and analyze the reliability and practicability of the circuit.
