Along with the development of society, the progress of technology, the construction of hydraulic engineering is larger and larger, the function is also more and more complicated, and which needs high level technology to construct it. All kinds of ships are used in the project, how to manage the ships effectively and reasonably, ensure that the ships can provide reliable guarantee for the project schedule, safety, and quality of the project, is becoming the key of the project management.For the port and waterway engineering, ships are the key of wining the biding, and also reflect the technological level and integral capacities of a company. The costs of ships make up a growing portion of costs of project. Especially in the offshore engineering, the costs of ships account for about40%of the total costs. And how to manage the ships effectively become the key of project management. The traditional mode used in the ships management such as high frequency call, radar and telephone cannot satisfy the needs of large and specialized ships. Automatic identification system (AIS) is a kind of digital navigation system model and equipment, integration of modern science and advanced technology, multi-disciplinary, local area network, computer technology, modern communication technology, and electronic information display technology. AIS provides the effective measures to prevent the collision between ships, enhance the radar and function of vessel traffic management system (VTS), and makes it possible that all information including visual course, route, name of vessel etc. are displayed in the electric chart. AIS assist to improve the communication mode among ships, improve the safety of the navigation, and enhance the overall consciousness of the ship, make the modern sailing into the digital age.Based on the basic theory of AIS system, considering the practical application of ship borne AIS system in the construction of Zhuhai Macau port artificial island of the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao Bridge Project, we realize that the AIS can assist the project management department to strengthen supervision on the ship, understand the actual and dynamic information of the ship, and intuitively understand whether the ship is in the process of navigation or mooring and comply fully with the rules. At the same time, the AIS can assist to improve the safe navigation of the ship, prevent the collision accidents of ships, and change the traditional communication mode of construction personnel on the ship who communicated by way of high frequency call and telephone formerly, and make it possible that the management personnel who are not at the construction site can clearly understand the dynamic scene of the ship. The AIS push the management of the ship towards the direction of digitization. Moreover, combined with the development and application of the management software, the AIS provide a new research direction for the navigation management of ships.
