Yongping Wang.Tibetan Buddhism has a profound impact in Tibet from political, economic, cultural and other aspects, Tibetan Buddhism monastic architecture is one of the main types of Tibetan traditional architecture.In the vast northern part of Tibet region, monastic buildings are influenced by factors like natural environment, so they are different from those in other parts of Tibet in location, layout and architectural form.This thesis starts from an architectural point of view, under the background of historical development of monastic architecture of the four major factions in northern Tibet. Based on architectural fieldwork and mapping information of every county, it researches the distribution characteristics, siting, layout, and architectural form of the monasteries in northern Tibet. At last, it preliminary analyzed different factions of the Tibetan Buddhist monastic murals as well as the details and spatial characteristics of the interior murals of each faction.In this thesis, there are total six chapters:The first chapter describes the research background, research content and object, methods and significance of the paper; The second chapter gives an overview of the natural environment, historical and cultural profile of northern Tibet.The third chapter systematic combines the distribution, location, layout and characteristics of the monastic architecture of different factions in northern Tibet; The fourth chapter analyzes the specialty of monastic architecture in northern Tibet. The fifth chapter studies the layout, structure, decoration, material of the northern Tibet monastic architecture.
