The selected topic is a subtopic of a national natural funded project chaired by ProfessorWang Yongping, which focuses on the researches on Vernacular Architecture in EasternTibet(No:50878104).Eastern Tibet locates at HengDuan Mountain and lies in Three-River Drainage Area. Itconnects Qinghai, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces together, with the name of the door of Tibet.Many factors,including the special geographical environment, diversified race culture andabundant religious culture,contribute to the form of distinctive architectural style in easternTibet, the essence of which are those influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. Based on theinheritance of the characteristics of traditional ones, Tibetan architecture present the natureof pluralism, regionalism and transitional.In this thesis, surveys on the spot are demonstrated to analyze and illustrate the TibetanBuddhist architecture in eastern Tibet from the perspective of architecture, with the support ofmass data from books, documents and drawings. References are taken from basic theories inrelated disciplines, like Urban Planning, Sociology,Archaeology, Geomantic Omen,andTourism.This thesis is composed of six chapters. The first chapter proposes the generalintroduction to the background of research, the purpose and significance of research, theoriesand methodology applied in this thesis, and the structure and framework. In Chapter2, thenatural environment and the historical background of Tibetan Buddhist architecture in easternTibet are summarized, while the elements that affect the development of Tibetan Buddhistarchitecture in eastern Tibet, as well as, their initial forms are recommended. Chapter3outlines the course of the development of Tibetan Buddhist architecture in eastern Tibet on theground of exact era records of Buddhist temples, and it analyzes the styles and features ofsome essential Buddhist temples. The organization management is mentioned in the fourthchapter, which also gives an overview on the architectural types in accordance with the innerhierarchical mechanism in temples. Chapter5concentrates on the features of TibetanBuddhist architecture in eastern Tibet. All walks of features are involved in this chapter, which are demonstrated in terms of the site selection of temples, and the architecture’smaterial selection, structure, plane characteristics and decorative features. The Chapter6discusses the Tibetan Buddhist architecture in eastern Tibet from the dimension of themulti-cultural background, and their protection and inheritance. As a conclusion, this chapteralso introduces the value of Tibetan Buddhist architecture in eastern Tibet with their specialgeographical element, so that the significance of protecting can be indicated, and the currentsituation of regional design of architecture in eastern Tibet.
