Technology, as the primary productive force, day after day improves people’s livingstandard with its high-speed development. At the same time, technology makes the people’srequirements for living quality become increasingly higher. The development of the car(considered as transportation means) aims at high performances, high safety and high quality, especially handling stability and driving comfort. As everyone knows, the car’s handlingstability and driving comfort are mainly depending on the performance of suspensionsystems. Springs, as the main part of the suspension system, work in parallel with thetelescopic shock absorber. So, it can absorb quickly the shock effect caused by the roadirregularities. And then it can also improve the driving quality of the car.The purpose of this thesis is to design and analyze certain C-category cars the metalsprings of the suspension systems of which will be replaced by air springs, and to make acomparison between them, then to assess the feasibility of the use of air springs in the car. This thesis sets up a dynamic model of the whole car, according to the data ofsuspension dynamics and compliance tests, calculates the stiffness of suspension bushing. This thesis also studies the effect of air spring piston section type on stiffness. Finite ElementAnalysis is used to improve section type and make the piston shape meet the requirements. In addition, Finite Element Analysis is used to obtain an ideal S-curve for the stiffness andthe internal section of the air spring piston. At the same time, based on the data of bench testsand their analysis, the thesis also studies the effect of amplitude and excitation frequency onair spring dynamic stiffness.Through the research work, this thesis explores the air spring development and designprocess based on certain C-category cars, and it leads to the mechanical design anddevelopment of air springs. A dynamic model of the whole car is used to compare andanalyze the handling stability and the driving comfort to get the advantage of air springscompared to helical springs.
