Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)has been developed quickly for decades, a new kind of VTOL(Vertical Take-Off and Landing)UAV which is called Ducted Fan Flying Robot attracts more and more attention. The rotor shrouded in the duct Can produce the thrust and lift.Based On the research of ducted fan, the aerodynamic characteristics of the flying robot are studied by means of combination of momentum theory and blade element theory in this paper. An aerodynamic mathematical modeling of the ducted fan and wings has been established.According to the design scheme of ducted fan flying robot, configuration and preliminary parameters are analyzed and determined finally. The general performance characteristics of the flying robot have been calculated, especially characteristics of the hovering status and flying-forward status.Based on preliminary configuration and parameters calculation, the primary structure of the flying robot has been finished using the CATIA design software, including ducted fan body, the rotor, upper-center, lower-center, stators and control vanes.In order to analyze the characteristic of the inner fluid field of the ducted fan flying robot, a simplified mechanical modeling has been designed using CATIA and then is meshed with GAMBIT. In this paper FLUENT software is used to analyze the fluid characteristic of the modeling.
