Research On The Artistic Features Of Ancient Bridges In Wuxi

As indispensable connections between houses and courtyards, bridges are the most basicfacilities in ancient cities. Its special shape not only represents the level of history, science, artand cultural development of a special period but also symbolizes Chinese civilization.However, with the development of the urban economy, great changes has taken place inmodern society. Expanding the city, widening the roads and upgrading the channel, whichpose a great threat to old bridges. As a result, the old bridges are disappearing at an alarmingrate. Even those who were classified as protection units are being subjected to improper repair.The protection of old bridges is now imminent.Wuxi ancient bridge was born in Taihu Baisin under the background of Wu Culture,which is the reflection of geographical, cultural, artistic features and construction technologyetc. The bridge with a long history and elegant appearance contains the constructiontechnology, aesthetic attitude and cultural connation. As a generation who inherit the valuableartistic heritage, we need to think about the future and the development of Wuxi ancientbridge. Therefore, we must persist in the harmony between the existence of ancient bridgesand the modernization while adopting diversified measures in line with local conditions toprotect ancient bridges. The paper makes a deep investigation on the status of existing ancientbridges in Wuxi. From the perspective of shapes, decorations, poetry, couplets and inscriptionof bridges, this paper summarizes the research results of the artistic features of Wuxi ancientbridge. In order to provide valuable realistic case to the study, protection and management ofChinese ancient bridges, the paper analyzes the influence of Wu Culture and Jiangnan regionon the construction of ancient bridges.The technique we applied is referred to as literature research, data analysis and induction,site study, analogy analysis method and other techniques. The paper starts with summarizingthe factors on the formation of Wuxi ancient bridge from the development process of thebridge. Secondly, combined with the special humanistic environment, regional characteristics,folk culture and the ancient bridge culture, I carry on the analysis to the value of social culture,historical exchange and the value of science and art. Thirdly, from structures to decorations,the paper dives deep into the artistic features of Wuxi ancient bridge. Finally, after a fieldsurvey of Wuxi ancient bridge, I sum up the problems to be solved and put forward thecorresponding measures to deal with the bridge.
