Passive design is the foundation of low carbon residential areas. Confronted with thegrim situation of energy and climate crisis, passive design is of great significant for energysaving and carbon reduction of construction industry. This paper set residential areas forresearch object, try to explore how to create high human comfort level and low carbonemission built environment with the passive design method. This thesis is divided into fivechapters:The first chapter is the introduction, the research background、meaning、aim is firstintroduced, then the research object and research scope is defined, last, the research methodsand outline is described. The second chapter is named low carbon theory and practice. Firstly, the concepts related to low carbon are described, and then the research current situation bothhome and abroad are stated. At last, in order to make the low carbon residential areascharacteristic more clearly, two mature cases are analysis. The third chapter is named basic research on passive design, firstly, the connotation of thepassive design is concluded, then the passive design research both home and aboard aredescribed. Secondly, how to use passive design method in the traditional Chinese dwelling isanalysis. At last, passive design software named are introduced. The forth chapter named low carbon residential area passive design strategies. maincontent include three levels: single building、building in groups and external space.Orientation、room layout、nature ventilation and lighting are analysis in single building level:While building in groups and external space mainly focus on the wind environment andsunlight environment. The fifth chapter is named computer simulation technique air passive low carbon design. This part the computer simulation technique named ECOTECT and CFD are used to analysispassive design elements in different design level. Then obtain data to evaluate initial designconcept which contribute to low carbon residential areas design. At last, the final master planis determined by the simulation results in energy passive design stages.
