Research On Craftsmanship Of Vernacular Dwellings In The South Of Jiangsu Province

China has a long history of residential research, our previous researcher left us with amount of research data, but the research field is often limited to culture and morphology. The analysis of the vernacular residential building skills, the groups decreased and vernacular dwellings skills on the verge of extinction still remains blank. This paper selects vernacular dwellings in southern region as the research object, analyzes their skills in order to create a system in southern of Jiangsu Province.In this paper, field research, typology research and comparison research methods.The paper is divided into three parts and six chapters in all. The first part is the layout features of vernacular dwellings. The status of vernacular dwellings investigation in sample area, summed up the spatial characteristics, folk houses, and single scale between the layout types of relationship. Obtain the craftsmen’s creative activities in the early stage of design thinking.The second part mainly introduces the construction techniques of the vernacular dwellings, the main craftsman starts as apprentice and creates a team composed of nature and folk activities. Through face to face interviews, craftsmen’s activities are recorded in South of Jiangsu area. The paper distributes folk custom etiquette, creates a taboo, understands the current build team type and character, and tries to reveal the master carpenter when facing a tough problem in the whole team. Finally discuss the crisis of the core function and construction technique lost.The third part mainly discusses and reorganized characteristics of skills of vernacular dwellings in South Jiangsu. Mainly from the traditional construction and others(decoration, wall, ground, roof terrace) to create two aspects. Through in-depth visits to create the construction site and the interview of craftsmen, the result is the wood construction techniques is the key of building. Through the collation of local craftsmen lineage analysis tools, wooden structure component manufacturing process and the difference of beam structure local language, understand the construction of internal language between local craftsmen and the common wooden frame type. The South Jiangsu vernacular dwellings timber building skills are not standardized region. This paper gives a supplement to the study of vernacular dwellings in South Jiangsu area, and records construction technique of the dying local craft. Finally it hopes to provide reference for future researchers.
