The research is launched in the Haoshuichuan Watershed that is located at Liupan Mountain range of southern Ningxia, where the rainfall is relative larger in Ningxia Province. But this range has serious soil erosion, weak ecological environment and serious uneven distribution of precipitation in space and time. In order to preserve soil and water, trap sediment, a series of dam-centric water conservancy projects has been built in this watershed. Limited water resources are impounded by these projects. Water resource was wasted by evaporation and deep infiltration so that it can not get effective used, therefore, both engineering and water utilization rate are low.The incoming water and sediment are changed because of terraced fields, afforestation and a series of soil and water conservational measures reached an intangible tipping point. Part of capacity is idled. Based on the above, adopting engineering measures to renovate silt dams for better utilization of idled capacity can make the silt dam have water supply function, just like reservoir. This is dam and reservoir transformation, which can improve utilization of engineering and water resources.The main research achievements are as following:(1) The division indicators of dam and reservoir transformationChoosing proper backbone projects for the research, which can analyzes the usable storage, sedimentation velocity, sediment statement, current land use status and various indicators. Then the functions of backbone projects are defined, meanwhile, the division indicators of dam and reservoir transformation that are applicable to Haoshuichuan Watershed are discussed. So these indicators can be used to guide the dam and reservoir transformation.(2) The technology of dam and reservoir transformationBased on division indicators of dam and reservoir transformation and functions of backbone projects are defined. Laozhanggou backbone project is chosen as the typical project. Then Laozhanggou backbone project is transformed by clean energy-powered siphon pipe. Finally achieved the functional transformation successfully based on energy efficiency and environmental protection, meanwhile, solved the problem that water resources below the intake of inclined culvert horizontal-tube could not be utilized. So the dam and reservoir transformation in the watershed can follow the instructions.
