With the application of HVDC system in in China’s power grid is becoming more and more popular. The requirement of the safety and reliability of the power system have higher requirements. The core of HVDC system is to study the protection of system, the stable operation of the transmission system can directly affect the operation of the entire power system. So it is necessary to study the performance of HVDC systems and the protection. In this paper, the HVDC system model is established based on the MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation software. Then simulate the normal operation of the HVDC system and its various typical faults. Based on the simulation results, this paper proposed a new traveling wave protection program based on wavelet transform for HVDC transmission line. The main contents are as follows:(1) Build the MATLAB/Simulink simulation model for the HVDC system. Using standard control system parameters, Station Based on this HVDC system, the operating mode and system failure simulation is carried out.(2)Analysis the traveling wave signal propagation on DC transmission lines. Study the transient traveling wave signal generated by a fault, analysis the process of folding wave reflection.(3) Analysis the program of the ABB and SIEMENS company’s traveling wave protection for HVDC system, comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the two programs Analysis the traditional traveling wave protection program for HVDC system. On the basis of the existing traveling wave protection scheme above, the wavelet transform traveling referenced of wave protection scheme in this paper. Then study the principle of wavelet transform in-depth.(4) Proposed a new type of traveling wave protection scheme for HVDC system based on wavelet analysis. This scheme is a single-ended fault traveling wave polarity comparing combined with fault location. Simulate the exact distance to the fault point calculation for the failure of the transmission line at different locations, full use of the information on the reverse voltage transient traveling wave signal. Not need to consider the issue of communication channels. It can improve reliability, and reduce project costs.
