Application Of Chinese Traditional Elements In Modern Landscape Design

With today’s rapid economic development in China, modern landscape, like a shining star scattered in the vast land, has separated from traditional landscape and is decorating people’s living environment in a simpler yet more popular way. Modern landscape design has become an indispensable element in the development of Chinese cities. Throughout the current situation of landscape design, modern landscape brings us not only the advanced design idea, but also a big impact on our traditional landscape design thoughts with the influx of western design. Lack of originality, these landscape designs superficially imitate western designs, emphasize visual effect but underestimate environmental ecology function, which leads to the same landscape design everywhere in China. Such "crash landscape" will not only affect a city’s accumulation of cultural connotation, but have a negative effect for the city even the country’s future development at the same time. In the blending era of China and the west, tradition and modern, Chinese modern landscape designs should learn the advanced western landscape design concepts at the same time keep the traditional national characteristics. The designs do not deviate from the local culture, which is the correct direction of development. How to apply traditional Chinese elements to modern landscape designs, and how to create the landscape designs more suitable for China’s cultural features and living environment, will be our current topic worthy of in-depth study.Based on the analysis of the expression of Chinese traditional elements in modern landscape designs, the purpose of this study is to find out a modern landscape expression suitable to traditional Chinese cultural features, which keeps China’s landscape designs in their own style characteristics at the same time connects with modern international landscape design concepts. Based on the scientific research method of "proposing the problem-analyzing the problem-solving the problem", the research combines with the design practice. Adopting the progressive type of essay wring form, the full text is divided into five chapters. The first chapter mainly summarizes the application of traditional Chinese elements to modern landscape designs, presents the purpose, significance and current situation and then establishes the research methods and framework of the thesis. The second chapter mainly elaborates the concepts and principles of traditional Chinese elements and modern landscape design, analyzes the historical evolution of traditional Chinese elements and modern landscape design, and induces our country’s representative style elements. The third chapter focuses on the expression of traditional Chinese elements used in modern landscape designs, the analysis of traditional Chinese elements and plant configuration, rigid pavement, water landscape, and pieces facilities respectively. The fourth chapter gives priority to practical cases, and analyzes the projects which embody the traditional Chinese elements in the modern landscape designs. Combined with the case pictures, the thesis makes argumentation for innovative applications of traditional Chinese elements. The fifth chapter induces and summarizes the innovative ways of the traditional Chinese elements used in the modern landscape designs. The six chapter comes to a conclusion, summarizing the research achievements and putting forward reasonable suggestions for future landscape designs. Based on traditional Chinese elements, the use of traditional Chinese patterns, characters, colors will blend new elements into the landscape design and make China’s modern landscape designs own more ethnic characteristics, which inherits China’s long historical culture, has a strong resonance in the popular mind, is consistent with China’s national circumstances, and is also the design direction for modern landscape designs to look for in future.
