The River Landscape Character Assessment

The river landscape belongs to comprehensive landscape types with the rich connotation, people also raise leisure, entertainment, ecology, culture and other diverse functional requirements of river landscape with the continuous development of society and the promotion of human consciousness, river landscape gradually becomes an important part of public living space, activity space of residents. While under the background of globalization, river landscape is similar to all landscape facing their own loss of historical culture and regional character as well as landscape convergence, homogenization and other common problem. In addition, with the need for flood control, the human constantly transformed the river through straightening, hard revetment construction and other measures blindly, ignoring the ecology of the river, the river natural property loss is prominent increasingly. What The landscape character assessment needs a new set of evaluation system and research ideas to guide the planning of river landscape types with different characteristics and regional planning and its development strategy based on the above.This paper regard the British landscape character assessment as the main supporting theory, firstly expounding the related concepts of landscape, landscape character and river landscape, elaborating the implementing procedure and method of landscape character assessment, combing with some of the UK practice cases to discourse them.Secondly, in the Suzhou River corridor regional scale level, building the index system of landscape character assessment constituted by the two indicators, we analyze and assess the landscape character of Suzhou River corridor to determine six types of landscape character and the division of their regional landscape features eventually. Then overall character of each landscape type and the region to be described, and separately we analyze the specific character and description from the three aspects of natural landscape, artificial landscape character and cognitive character, the final drawing is shown on the type and character of each landscape wherein the range of the area boundaries.Finally, the index system of landscape character assessment are constructed in a regional scale of Suzhou River corridor on the basis of the overall landscape character assessment and analysis of Suzhou River corridor, which consists of two tiers of indexes, deeper and detailed analysis and evaluation of Suzhou River Corridor landscape character was implemented, the primary index is the secondary index of the regional scale level. Finally we determine the fifteen types of landscape features and landscape character of each divided region on the urban scale, its character is described separately and the boundaries of their respective areas is drawn out.The index system of landscape character assessment featuring two different scale levels form a nested structure, Suzhou River corridor landscape character were described by systematic analysis and evaluation. This paper has some practical significance for the Suzhou River in the future planning and development to construct a reference, also providing a new perspective and research ideas to evaluate the character of the river landscape.
