Railway wagon is an important equipment of railway freight and the material basis for the completion of railway freight task. Manufacturing technology of railway wagon continues to improve in our country. China has completed the load from the levels of 60 t to 70 t comprehensive upgrade. It puts forward the new direction of the railway freight fast, overloading, specialty. The color coating as an important part of railway wagon appearance, it with the operation and vision of people produce direct interaction relations. Excellent painting color can not only facilitate the operator to accurate identify and use, improve wagon safety, but also to give the viewer an unforgettable aesthetic experience. At present, due to differences in the development of design disciplines, the external coating of railway wagons seems lackluster in our country. Though the manufacturing technology has been caught up in developed countries, but coating design there is a large gap. Railway wagons give the visual impression of old, cold, dirty.This subject from the viewpoint of semiotics, will regard color of railway wagons as a kind of Symbol. First I elaborated the coating color symbol representation level and connotation level, explained the process of symbols to convey. Secondly, I generalized and combed the coating rules of railway wagons in our country, collected the coating color, compared from history (vertical axis) and models (horizontal axis). Analyzing the evolution regularity and summarizing the situation of railway wagon coating in our country. Put forward the design elements of functional, environmental, aesthetic, and cultural and illustrated the excellent coating of some foreign countries. Finally, through the experiment method of semantics screened the core semantics having expressed by China’s railway wagons match the commonly used color in coating. Establishment railway wagons color— semantic matching space. Provide a quantifiable theory basis for the selection of wagons painting designs.
