As the key part of a transportation hub, the expressway carries a large amount of transportation demand in our country. With the development of our country’s economy, the expressway mileage increases quickly year by year. Due to the unique advantages and safe travel environment of the expressway, it has been the first choice for drivers. However, the ownership of the vehicle is also growth, which inevitably increases the pressure of expressway transportation. It results in higher service demand for drivers, and it leads to more and more operational management services for expressway managers. The traditional mechanical and electrical system of the expressway in our country cannot satisfy the needs of drivers and expressway managers completely, which increases the transportation contradiction gradually.With the development of science and technology in our country, expressway information construction is considered to be the effective way of improving expressway performances, such as expressway safety, travel service, and operation management. Based on this, a lot of manpower, material resources and financial resources are invested to study the expressway information in our country, and some significant results have been achieved. But at present, almost all the expressway information construction is limited to the sole intelligent technology. So the intelligent transportation system is independent from each other, and transportation data cannot be shared in all the systems. Due to the above reasons, the problem of expressway transportation cannot be solved in our country.Four transportation constructions are proposed in 2014 by the Ministry of Transportation. Smart transportation plays a critical role in all the constructions. Compared with the single-phase intelligent transportation technology, the smart transportation can analyze the existing traffic problems from the overall level. With development of the high-tech, the internet of things and loud computing become mature year by year, so they can provide technical feasibility for smart transportation construction. Based on this, expressway smart transportation platform and preliminary application are researched in the paper.Serious diverse contents are researched in the paper. Firstly, discussions with expressway information experts and expeditions to the investigation of typical city’s expressway information are convened, such as Zhejiang, Shenzhen, Guizhou, Chongqing, Sichuan and so on. Bases on this, the problems of expressway information are analyzed and summed up. Secondly, the characteristics of the internet of things and cloud computing technologies, as well as the applications are to be elaborated. And then the analysis of demand and feasibility for expressway smart transportation is made. The principles and target of expressway smart transportation are proposed. After that, platform construction is built. Thirdly, the cloud deployment of the expressway smart transportation in the paper is put forwarded. And researches on the hierarchical model of cloud platform are made. Then the IasS layer, PasS layer and SasS layer are designed, and then the security service system of cloud platform is studied. At last, researches on the preliminary application of the expressway smart transportation is made, mainly including the wisdom of management and service.
