Since 1999 when the Ministry of Education promulgated the "21st Century Education Revitalization Action Plan", a wave of construction of colleges and universities has been set off all over the conutry. Campuses in China have undergone great changes. However, due to the effect that campus planners lack of awarenesses on university space, and the ability to grasp the facts of the students mental and behavioral characteristics and deliver effective assessment of prospects for the overall planning of the campus, the general expansion of the campus area associated with the students’ losses of sense of belonging on campus. Campus as a real space resources has become an object for students to cramble. Therefore, how to enhance the quality of campus space to meet the psychological demands of teachers and students on campus, has become an significant problems to be solved.In-between space describes the concept of transitional space and heterogeneity of space. It plays an important role in campuses on regulating the transition of indoor and outdoor space, enhancing campus communicative behaviors and creating a pleasant campus environment. Boundary however, describes the spatial territory existed in the range of a particular area, it is one of premise to generate a sense of a perticular area. Seeing through the social attributes of people, the sense of belonging related identity from certain groups. One of the traditional planning methods is that as long as the functional configuration clear enough, people’s sense of the belongings will not be violated, problem coming from unclear boundaries are often simplified to the problems of construction and division of different building functions. In fact, on campus, if the configuration consistent with the planned number of teaching space, probably still unable to meet the needs of students in learning spaces. The thesis’s study subjects are in-between spaces and territorial border on Campuses. Firstly, in the second chapter and the third chapter, the thesis will seperately point out the characteristics, elements and mechanisms of in-between space and border. Secondly, in the fourth chapter, the thesis will illustrate the dialectical relationship between those two subjects, which will constitute a complementary mechanism, list the presence status of in-between space and territory due to different spatial levels of spaces, as well as how these states affect people’s psychological behavior. And thirdly, in the fifth chapter, due to the dialectical relationship between in-between spaces and and territorial border, the thesis will analyze historical trends on campus development, and on which basis, to propose optimization strategies of how to create a harmonious environment for sustainable campuses.During the process of building of the theoretical construction, I sought territory and spacial diagrams for help, and combined theories with today’s reality on campuses, with a view to provide an idea and reference in planning and construction of campuses today.
