Industrial design is a multi-disciplinary subject, and is also an important way of enterprise innovation and value appreciation.The emergence of virtual reality technology expands the designer’s thinking space so that the designer can make a bold vision under the environment of virtual interactivity and fully express design ideas, which is more conducive to the product development and innovation.In this paper, based on the industrial design theories, we studied the specific applications of virtual reality technology in product design. According to the problems in virtual product design and marketing of textile machine, we proposed that apply virtual reality technology to aid product design as a solution. With product design and marketing of a combing machine invented by Shanxi Hongji Sci-tech Co. Ltd. as an example, we discussed the feasibility of application of virtual reality technology to product design and marketing with regard to existing virtual reality technology and product design. Through producing 3D models and animations by 3D MAX, interaction display in VRP, web publishing and such experiments, we finally made the availability of design、publicity and marketing the combing machine in the form of interactive 3D animation through network interconnection. In this paper, we systematic introduced how virtual reality technology aided the product design, and concepts of the interactive marketing. We also introduced the range, characteristics and advantages of the main software-3D MAX and VRP. In pace with the development of virtual reality technology, we revealed that industrial design is facing huge innovation opportunities and challenges. Virtual reality technology, as a surreal way in product design, will further develop, grow and finally lead the future of the design industry.
