The voltage quality plays a vital role in the power systems and the voltage has a tight connection with the reactive power. Therefore, in order to operate safely and stably, it is important for power systems to ensure the balance of reactive power. Nowadays, the dynamic reactive power compensation technology has been widely used, and many manufacture’s products have been able to meet the needs of the reactive power balance in some degree. But, at this stage, the method of the most of the reactive power compensation is local compensation which belonging to the "point" compensation. With the rapid development of smart grid, we have a growing need for the more efficient and reasonable "system level" compensation, which can be achieved by the mutual cooperation among the reactive power compensation devices. However, due to the lack of a unified standard, poor interoperability and the lack of communication protocol circulation, the development of manufacture’s products is seriously restricted. Therefore, applying IEC61850 which is the only international standard of substation automation system into the reactive power compensation device, plays an important role in the development of dynamic reactive power compensation technology, will lay the foundation for the safe and stable operation of the power system under the environment of smart grid.This paper studies the reactive power compensation device in Brazil Rio Verde Norte station, models based on IEC61850, generates the configuration file, and finally realizes communication services, which according to the National Institute of Smart Grid research projects "Research and Application of IEC61850 based on the AMP platform".Firstly, this paper describes the contents of IEC61850 communication protocol, and analyzes the hierarchical information model of the station level, the bay level, the process level and the typical method of self-describing data in detail. This paper studies eight ACSI basic information models and their corresponding service and SCSM technology.Taking the reactive power compensation device in Brazil Rio Verde Norte station as an example, this paper makes a detailed study of its basic model structure, function, and regulation and control methods, and summarizes functional requirements of the reactive power compensation device which is decoupled in five parts including alarm, measurement, control, protection and fault recording. In this paper, an object-oriented design method is used to apply these functions into the reactive power compensation IED logic component, and the step of this project is given out.After that, in accordance with IEC61850 standard information model, following the method of the modeling, this paper builds the model for the reactive power compensation IED from four parts including the logical node, the data, the logic device, and the server. Finally, the paper will get a server including three access points referred to as S1, G1, M1, seven logical devices including LDO, CTRL, PROT, MEAS, RCD, PI and SVLD and a large number of logical node and data. By the mean of describing the Substation Configuration Description Language and six SCL files and their project configuration processes, this paper highlights the construction method of reactive power compensation device ICD/CID files, and configures the SCL files of reactive power compensation from Header segment, Communication segment, IED segment and DataTypeTemplates segment respectively.Finally, this paper introduces the MMS and describes the communication process between the client and the server by use of MMS and the mapping relation between IEC61850 and MMS objects. This paper focuses on MMS-EASE Lite package, and writes the relevant function to achieve the conversion between IEC61850 and MMS object. Through the mapping table of the datamap.cfg, this paper writes relevant functions to complete the data mapping. Then this paper gives out the step to realize the communication in the client and server side separately and accomplishes the data transmission between the client and the server.
