A Design-based Research On The High Density University Campus In The Urban Context

The high density university campus in urban area talked about in this paper refers to the university campus in the downtown area. It is different from the suburban university campus and the university town. The urban development has increases its utilization of land. The land resources in the downtown area with greater value have been extremely in shortage. Faced with the severe situation, the planning and construction of the high density university campus in the downtown area becomes more important and challenging.This paper consists of four chapters. Chapter 1 expounds theoretical research related to the high density campus, points out the difference between this research and previous researches and define concepts related to the high density campus. Chapter 2 investigates the university campus in the downtown area of Beijing and Hong Kong. By analyzing the two design cases and evaluating the status quo of the high density university campus in Beijing and Hong Kong, this paper puts forward the referential significance of the high density university campus design in Hong Kong to that of Beijing, and puts forward clear design strategies for the high density university campus in Chapter 3. Chapter 3 expounds the connotation and content of the high density university campus design strategies, puts forward five design strategies and analyzes the practical significance and application prospects of these strategies to the transformation of campus. Chapter 4 mainly uses the high density campus design strategies to guide the conceptual design of the high density Xicheng District Campus of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture.All in all, this research mainly explores the density potential and characteristics of the university campus to be constructed in a high density environment conditions of the downturn area faced with severe land shortage and soaring land price; discusses and expounds design strategies and methods which can improve campus building space both qualitatively and quantitatively, and allow all buildings to coexist in the high density environment.
