Space usage is the essential difference between architecture and other arts, which links architecture and human beings tightly. With the supremacy of vision innowadays, space usage is often considered as a way to satisfy material needs, excluded of spiritual values. The study of contemporary physiology and psychologyshows that body, as the communicating media of human and architecture, couldreceive spiritual satisfaction in the process of using architectural space. Therefore, space usage can exceed the narrow definition of functionalism to achieve spiritualmeanings. In the development of modern architecture, the phenomena of“non-functional usage” are emerging constantly and the autonomous use behavior isone of them. This new behavior of space usage reflects the new needs ofcontemporary people that they wish to obtain spiritual promotion in space usage. This thesis tries to study the initiation mechanism of autonomous behavior inmodern architectural space, in order to catch the opportunity brought bycontemporary needs to develop architecture from a humane aspect. The content of this thesis consists of four parts. The first part reveals thephenomena of autonomous behavior in modern architectural spaces. The second partanalysis the generating principles of autonomous behavior with psychologicalknowledge. The third part based on the psychological generating principles to putforward design strategies. The fourth part points out the scope of application of“autonomous use space” and its design difficult points, with several design cases asproofs. The conclusion part reflects the whole research and raise questions for theinnovation methods of Chinese contemporary architecture. Among them, the secondpart and the third part are the core content, uniting architecture and psychology toachieve a comprehensive study of the initiation mechanism of autonomous behaviorin modern architectural space.
