The part’s manufacturability means the feasibility and the economy of themanufacture and servicing on the precondition of satisfies the demand of use. Themanufacturability includes the quality of machining, assembly and disassembly. Asone of the main tools of Concurrent Engineering (CE), the skill of Design forManufacturing (DFM) could help the designer foresee in the designing stage thepossible problems which may happen in the manufacturing stage, then ameliorate thedesign, shorten the product’s life cycle, lower the cost, and afford the assist for theimprovement of manufacturability.DFM based on feature, as one of the important methods of DFM, could make thepart’s manufacture information fully contained in the feature model, and make theanalyses of manufacturability go along perfect. During the DFM based on feature, theskill of feature recognition is an important point which could affect the effect of DFM.Recognizing the feature of the part fully and correctly could afford DFM a usefulfeature model, and ensure the DFM based on feature performs well.Based on the related works on the feature recognition field, we perform acomparision among these methods and developed a flexible feature recognitionmethod based on the rules. We classify the features into three levels-primary level, extended level and custom level. We also developed an automatic recognitionalgorithm and a semiautomatic one. With these we improve the recognition resultsand meet various requirements. Also, we developed a calculation algorithm based on the3D part model.According to the feature recognition result, we obtain the specific data for eachmachined feature from manufacturing resource library, and we calculate the removedvolume and material removal volume. Therefore we get the machining time and cost.Associated with the material cost, setup cost and extra cost, we can get themanufacturing cost. Finally, we use Visual Studio2005as IDE to develop our program-BITDFMA. We use ACIS R19as3D modeling kernel, HOOPS1710as the visualizationplatform, C++as the develop language. We use a missile part model to verify thevalidity and practicality.
