Large pumped storage power station runs flexible and responds quickly, It is a specialpower supply which has a variety of functions such as peaking、valley filling、FM、phasemodulation、spare and black start in the power system, and is the most economical large-scaleenergy storage facilities. The static frequency converter (SFC, Static Frequency Converter) isone of the specific important electrical equipments used in large pumped storage power station,its function is to gradually increase the speed of the generator until reversible unit put in to thepower grid through electromagnetic, which generated by adjusting the current frequency of thereversible unit stator winding after a field established by Reversible rotor unit. As a new wayof synchronous drive, static frequency converter has many advantages: high efficiency andgood control performance; smooth start and without out of step problems; multiple units canshare a set of SFC and thus reduce the investment of single machine; start fast and reliably,and the impact on motor and grid is very small, etc. Frequency conversion starting is thepreferred way to start pumping conditions of the large pumped storage power station, it is notonly a important means of advancing reliable and economical operation of storage station aswell as improving the success rate of start, but aslo a necessary requirement to achieve safeand stable operation of the power grid.This paper studies the key technologies and problems of application of static frequencyconverter to large pumped storage power station. By studying the fundamental principle ofstatic frequency converter, to investigate the technical requirements and applications ofcomponents in SFC, and learn the application key technologies of static frequency converterto large pumped storage power station, which including SFC start principle、detection of therotor position(difficulties in booting process of static frequency converter)、control programto launch and protective measures of SFC, etc. The realization of rotor seat measurement、thecontrol of SFC in the whole starting process and the main electrical protection in guangzhoupumped storage power station is to be analysed, and make a summary of operation andmaintenance experience about application of SFC to large pumped storage power station. Bycollecting and researching the regular fails and problems happened regularly in the applicationof SFC to large pumped storage power station, to analyse and summarize why this problemshappen, and study a general treatment principle for such problems, the common issues in theapplication of SFC and how to solve them would be introduced by taking guangzhou pumped storage power station for example, and the issue about application of SFC to large pumpedstorage power station as well as harmonic generation problem are focused to explore how toimprove SFC harmonic working condition.
