As an increased amount of high grade roads are constructed in the nation, the roads’performance and usage are held to a much higher standard. The composition of themodified asphalt includes asphalt, mineral aggregates and several chemical additives. Theratio of asphalt and the chemical additives essentially decide the road’s performance.Currently, the possibility of modifying the mineral aggregates’gradation is relatively small,so most researchers focus on modifying the asphalt’s performance and finding the suitablechemical additives. Asphalt is a material with viscoelastic plasticity, which means thatasphalt is very sensitive to the change of temperature. Normally, asphalt cracks easily underlow temperature, and softens easily under high temperature. It is very difficult to ensurethe asphalt’s performance in any specific region considering the fact that the temperaturecan change dramatically in different seasons. Thus, the research on modifying asphalt’sperformance is extremely important. This paper mainly focuses on improving the asphalt’sperformance through adding pre-processed waste rubber powder. The research result isbased on multiple in-door experiments and the analysis of the performance of the modifiedasphalt and the mixed compounds. The main goal is to improve the asphalt’s performancein road construction.The modified asphalt is a mixture of resin, rubber powder and other polynomials. Theadded mixture reacts with asphalt so that the performance of the modified asphalt can beimproved. Currently, the most common practice in the nation is to use the polynomials as amodifier to modify the asphalt.The use of waste rubber is the best and most practical way to handle waste tires. As thepolymer chemical technology develops rapidly, the technology of using waste tires tomodify asphalt has achieved an amazing break through.The waste rubber powder can be used to better the asphalt mixture’s performance, theasphalt road’s stability under high temperature, its crack resistance under low temperature,water stability, and fatigue resistance. By analyzing the rubber modified asphalt and rubbermodified asphalt mixture, a better and more comprehensive road performance can beachieved. As the rubber modified asphalt’s enhancement mechanism is used, thecorresponding engineering application, material mixing proportion, technical standard, andquality control will be developed.The indoor parallel experiments are conducted to compare different incorporatedrubber modified asphalt with SBS modified asphalt and normal asphalt. The results of theexperiments essentially decide the best adding amount, adding time, and addingtemperature of rubber modified asphalt. The ratio test of rubber modified asphalt mixture,SBS modified asphalt mixture, and normal asphalt mixture ensures the optimal oilstoneratio and mineral gradation. Finally, a long term tracking of the trial roads can determinethe related manufacturing technique and quality control standards.The application study of using waste materials to improve the asphalt’s roadperformance is a practical method to realize a better road performance as well as awell-protected natural environment. It is the method that can realize both economic andsocial benefits at the same time.
