Based on the field trip and observation on contemporary architecture in Germanyand Austria, the thesis carries out the comparative analysis on contemporaryarchitectural aesthetics between the two countries. Through the review of theirarchitecture and art phenomena since the second half of19thcentury till today, we couldfind that the phenomena of the two countries go on different directions, which inGermany it is conservative while in Austria it is plural, although the objectiveinfluencing factors are similar. Thus, the thesis carries out the analysis of theirarchitectural aesthetics separately on two levels: cognition and intention. The former isto analyze architectural forms through important large construction projects lead bygovernments and projects by characteristic architects. On cognition level, Order vs.Disorder means clearness vs. complicity on form, and returning to historical style vs.creating new style on relationship to the city landscape. The latter is to analyze whythey present the cognitive phenomena of order and disorder. The thesis points out thatthe establishment of national identity is the prerequisite of the establishment ofarchitectural aesthetics. Due to the defining of “criminal” with Germany and “victim” ofAustria, the two countries established different national identity, based upon which, architectural legitimacy is differently sought. Then the two countries make differentaesthetic choices under the influence of strong exterior and interior factors, andgradually form their aesthetic trends. Thus on intention level, Order vs. Disorder meansonly vs. plural architectural legitimacy, democratic consciousness due to exterior powervs. destructive consciousness due to interior power, inhibiting new order vs.encouraging new order in public sense. At last, the thesis tries to conclude with anadjusting mechanism of architectural aesthetics, to shed some enlightenment on thecurrent chaotic contemporary architectural practice in China.
