Vortex diode is a flow control device that works similar to a check valve.Compared to a typical check valve, the diode has some advantages, such as a simplestructure, no moving parts, no external control and power, and high reliability. Vortexdiode has been widely used in medical, petrochemical and nuclear industries. Vortexdiode may also be used for passive residual heat removal in a fluoride salt-cooledhigh-temperature reactor. In the thesis, we simulated the flow characteristics inside the vortex diode usingcomputational fluid dynamics. We then proposed geometry optimizations of the diodebased on the results of the simulation, including adding a cone at the bottom of thevortex chamber and adjusting the size of the transition arc. We used numericalsimulations combined with experiments to find the optimized sizes of the cone andthe arc. In addition, we analyzed the applicability of the water experiment results tofluoride salts. The work presented in this thesis may provide some guidance for thefurther design optimization of the vortex diode. |
