Since we have architecture in our lives, architecture diagrams have always beenthe most important tool to convey information,and will translate architect’s thinkingsinto the visible imagine. Compared to the formal language, the architecturaldiagrams are much more vivid and comprehensive in the process of expressing, and italso can resonate with the information receiver. The architectural diagrams has manyfunctions that can be used.When it is used to explain, an architectural diagram canshow the idea of the whole architecture to non-professionals much more clearly andeasily.But I think the most important function of the architectural diagrams is as akind of " generator " during the process of the architectural design, and play a role ofthe generative machine.In this essay, we are trying to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of thegenerative diagrams based on the study on of generative diagrams in contemporaryarchitectural theories and the related architectural practices. According to the differenttimes of different generative diagrams, we can call them with different names:themodern-generative-diagram theories and the contemporary-generative-diagramtheories. The study of the modern generative diagrams mainly discussed aboutChristopher Alexander ’s "structural diagram ", Peter Eisenman ’s classic theory andStan Allen’s "Field Conditions diagrams ".At the same time, the contemporarygenerative diagrams are mainly including the theories of digital diagrams, sociologydiagrams,“digram architecture" and activity diagrams. After a series of studies andcomparation of different generative diagram theories, we want to find out theadvantages and disadvantages of each theories, and play a role in the development ofthe generative diagrams theoretically and practically in the future.
