Transmission line is an important part of the power system, and is the basis for the safe operation of the power grid. The stress and sag of circuit is the main indicator of transmission line design and operation. It is very important to the security of electricity supply and operation of the line, and therefore it must be controlled within the range of design requirements. If we want the transmission line system become more intelligent, we must state all relevant parameters for real-time monitoring of transmission lines. In these parameters the most important is the stress and sag of line, so it has a very important significance for its effective monitoring and management, and it is an important part of intelligent transmission lines. In this paper, carried out a detailed theoretical analysis of transmission line stress and sag, and an in-depth study of the domestic and foreign research status and monitoring methods of on-line monitoring. Advantages and disadvantages of the commonly used stress sensor that used in stress monitoring is analyzed, and the several methods of sag monitoring are studied. In this paper, bistatic sonar localization is used in sag monitoring, and carried out a detailed analysis of the measurement principle and accuracy. This method does not have to calculate the amount of sag, but by the relevant parameters are calculated and drawn sag. The advantage of directly measured by sonar method sag is fast, accurate, and high precision. Meanwhile, the hardware and software systems of the monitoring of transmission line stress and sag are architected, and each module is described.
