At present, higher education is being expanded gradually and becoming increasingly important in the society as educational undertakings achieve all-around development in China. Besides, there are higher and higher requirements for educational buildings in this era with the constant development of the society and progressive advancement of scientific technologies. Therefore, educational buildings have been flourishing according to new norms of material environment since the new century, among which educational buildings for arts play an important role. Different from other educational buildings, the educational buildings for arts are not only practical and beautiful, but also have higher requirements for artistic features, which have just begun to develop in recent years. What’s more, it’s a new exploration of analyzing educational buildings for arts according to topographical conditions of hills since people have seldom gotten dedicated to this aspect or investigated it. Based on special topographic conditions of hills, the author examines spatial design of educational buildings for arts by referring to theoretical research findings. In combination with the practices of designing arts buildings for the Hunan City University, an attempt is made to find out an approach to integrate educational buildings for arts with topography of hills and guidance is thereby provided for relevant designs in the future.First of all, it is proposed that communication and exhibition space shall be highlighted apart from the architectural space for conventional education in educational buildings for arts. Besides, modern educational buildings for arts shall be open, intensive, personalized and intelligent. After the needs for modern educational buildings for arts and their development are analyzed, an emphasis is laid on studying the spatial design of these buildings under topographic conditions of hills from the perspective of forms, exterior and interior space based on the practices of designing arts buildings in the Hunan City University. As regards spatial design of forms, corresponding design essentials are put forward on the basis of analyzing changes to agricultural forms under topographic conditions of hills. Integration, co-building and confrontation are considered to be three categories of architectural forms under such conditions. In integrating buildings with environment, a building may be designed as a part of landscape or as a viewing point.Concerning the design of exterior space, it is proposed that the entrance shall be designed as space towards sites for activities. The existence of the space shall be implied by properly arranging lawns, plants and roads according to height differences. The courtyard may be deemed as transition between environment and interior space. By taking advantage of the courtyard, the spatial sequence of the architecture may be combined with undulating topography of slopes. The atrium shall meet five requirements concerning functions for dispersing crowds, proper connection with other space, proper size, appropriate artistic theme and aesthetic visual impression. As for design of interior space, the components are analyzed, including empty space, halls, classrooms and space for traffic. Design elements such as plants, waters, oddments and chairs are proposed to be introduced into the empty space. In designing halls, the needs for safety, natural light and fire-fighting shall be taken into full consideration. In terms of classrooms, it is necessary to consider the functional needs for different types of classrooms. They shall be designed according to lighting needs and topographic features. In designing stairs within the space for traffic, consideration shall be taken to connect the space in different units to create interesting space based on meeting the requirements for safe evacuation. It is better to apply natural lighting in corridors. For aisles with excessively long sequence, it is necessary to set up space with nodes amplified in appropriate places, place suitable public facilities and enrich the activities within the aisles.Educational buildings for arts are one of the important educational buildings, of which the spatial design in topography of hills is completed according to practical situation of areas, whereas such design has never been emphasized. By exemplifying the design of arts buildings in the Hunan City University, the author preliminarily studies and discusses the design of educational buildings for arts on hills, in hope of providing certain references and guidance for future design.
