In this thesis I investigated the pest status and control methods of termites damaging reservoir dams in Nanning City to provide knowledge for the development of termite control measures in those reservoir dams.Nanning City is located in the subtropical climate zone with the annual average temperature being21.6℃, coldest monthly average12.8℃, annual average rainfall1304.2mm, annual average relative humidity79%, and acidic soil. The natural conditions in Nanning are suitable for termite survival and reproduction. There are748reservoirs in Nanning, which provide78%agricultural irrigation needs and play important roles in flood control and environmental protection. About97.7%of these reservoir dams are mainly made of soil which allows termites to damage, threatening dam safety. In2010,1surveyed444reservoir dams and found that61.5%of them were damaged by termites. The main species of pest termites found are Odontotermes formosanus (Shiraki), Macrotermes barney (Light) and Odontotermes hainanensis (Light). The occurrence degree of termites in dams has a close relationship with the reservoir management, i.e. the better the control was performed, the lower the damage degree was found. However, the existing reservoir management system and its associated policy need improving, for example, water management department should establish specific agencies for termite control.Considering the above-mentioned problems, the thesis proposes some corresponding countermeasures:1. speeding up system reform on reservoir management;2. strengthening the team construction;3. developing and implementing of security systems;4. increasing financial support;5. enhancing basic research, improving technology transfer;6. practicing integrated management system;7. strengthening scientific publicity on termites. The thesis also discusses the appropriate control methods for termites in Nanning reservoir dams, team responsibility for pest control, and integrated management approaches.
