| During the transition period, urban planning practice will face more uncertainty challenges in the future. This paper selects the residential land use transition of Hangzhou "Chengxi"(1984-1998) as the object of research. In order to make this historical analysis approach the historical experience world, this paper discusses the methodological problem firstly. This discussion lays the basic perspective of case study—constraints. After the establishment of case analysis framework, this paper analyses the residential land use expanse inHangzhou"Chengxi"(1984-1998).The main conclusions in this research are as follows:(1) Abstract issueFirstly, this paper summarises the western planning theory evolution (1950s-1990s) in perspective of constraints.Secondly, this paper analyses the methodological thinkings of planning scholars (Bing Zhang and Yaping Wei), institutional economists (Coase. Yifu Lind and Pingyuan Xiong), and a classical sociologist (Max Weber). Finally, based on urban planning’s own characteristics, the paper argues that the perspective of constraints and inspiration will make the analysis approach the historical experience world.(2) Specific issueThe case study of Hangzhou "Chengxi" residential land use expanse (1984-1998) show that:during the transition from planned economy to market economy, Hangzhou "Chengxi"(1992-1998)’s original constraints had changed, potential constraints had appeared and new constraints had occured. Those transformations formed the different phenomena of Hangzhou "Chengxi" residential land use(1984-1991and1992-1998). |
