Rich and colorful Chinese traditional architectural decoration art is ourprecious wealth of the ancients left. Chiwen is one of the traditionaldecoration China on building roof. Chiwen have a long history of theformation and development. Chiwen on the roof of the house, at the verybeginning, was decided by its building function which can reinforce theroof. With the development of time, Chiwen’s shape, decoration and colorgradually changed, and was given many more beautiful meanings.From the visual angle, explores the origin of Chiwen. In the HanDynasty unearthed some portrait stone, we can find two ridged roofappeared upturned characteristics. Its development process experiencedthree periods: Chiwei period, Chiwen period and Chiwen period. Chiwen tothe Ming and Qing Dynasties, its appearance and cultural connotationshave reached a peak, is a period of history of the development of Chiwen inthe most characteristic. Ming and Qing Chiwen can be divided into theofficial type Chiwen and popular type Chiwen, the official Chiwen shapefixed, steady, ornamentation is characteristic, and its appearance is a color.And the popular type Chiwen is more diverse, with no fixed shape. Glazedcanal is an important place of origin, until today, the kiln fire remainsstrong, the production process has been retained.Chiwen is not only the extension of Chinese dragon culture, but alsothe symbol of Chinese etiquette culture and the manifests of Chinese Fengshui and hevean concept. In addition, it brings Chinese traditionalarchitecture an special asethetic value. In the course of the artistic processof Chiwen, as same as the Chinese traditional dragon, it firstly originatedfrom the imitation of nature. In this process, the caftmen graduallydeveloped to create beauty rather than imitate, and finally to leap into thenew high of culture and connotation. The asethetic forms and cuturalconnotation of Chiwen and the ‘dragon’ elements represented by Chiwenare completely worth us looking into from the view of design.
