The North Xu chang Interchange is located in the north of Xu chang City and covers a length of1.7Km on the expressway between Zhengzhou and Luo he, which is part of the Beijing-Zhuhai National Trunk Highway. The program is developed under the supervision of the Project Department for the Widening of Zhengzhou-Luohe Expressway and the construction cost104.5million RMBY. As the production base of the state as well as Henan Province, Xu chang is abundant in grain, tobacco, and cotton and has achieved rapid economic growth in recent years. According to the master plan being implemented for the development of the new urban area of the city, the traffic flow to the terminal of north Xu chang is expected to increase at a considerable rate in near future. The city has now2accesses to the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway; one is East Xu chang Tollgate in the south and the other Xu chang Tollgate in the middle. The vehicles in north Xu chang, however, have to make a detour down to Xu chang Tollgate to get on the expressway, which has caused increasing strain to the traffic on the urban roads. The construction of North Xu chang Interchange is necessitated by the need to optimize the local highway network and the traffic distribution in urban area.As the employee of the Project Department for the Widening of Zhengzhou-Luohe Expressway, the author worked as the principal supervisor of the North Xvchang Interchange Program in2009who is responsible for the engineering feasibility study. The study began with in-depth investigations that were made into relative respects such as the status of social-economic development, the existing condition of highways, the tourism planning and the topographical information of the local area. On this basis, analysis was made systematically on the necessity, the environmental impact, and the design of the program. Meanwhile, on-the-spot survey was made to determine the connection between the interchange and local roads, and to confirm the distribution of structures in nearby area. The communication line was kept open during the whole period of the engineering feasibility study with local government and traffic authority whose opinions or proposals were to be taken into the design of the project. On the basis of extensive investigation into the current situation and the development plan of local economy, and of the evaluation on the influence of the program, analysis and forecast on the traffic volume were made by use of the Four-stage MethodIssues that are commonly encountered during construction, such as the traffic control, the availability of soil, are discussed in detail in this paper for which solutions are proposed.
