Currently, digital substation areas showing a trend of rapid development, IEC61850standard achieves a fully digital intelligent substation protection application. Digital protection is different from the traditional electromagnetic relay protection and microprocessor relay protection in the hardware structure, configuration and implementation, so it has some theoretical significance and practical value of the study of digital substation relay configuration.This paper introduce the research status and key issues of relay protection in detail, and introduce the concept of digital substation, and IEC61850standards’s application process, the content, the main features. Analyze the key role of the process bus communication technology in the digital substation, and describe GOOSE model used in the information transmission. Analyze some new issues of relay protection of digital substation, specifically including electronic transformer applications, sampling synchronization problems, network problems trips, protection, operation, maintenance and repair problems.Conventional model and station centralized model of relay protection of digital substation are proposed. Analyze some key issues of conventional model, inclueding synchronization, interoperability, direct mining throbbing, electronic transformer reliability. Pointing out the relay protection person in the scene are familiar with the conventional protection scheme, but it did not fully consider the change brought by intelligent devices, so it is just a transition program is achieve digital substation relay protection.For station centralized model, introduce its main relay protection and backup protection. Take110kV digital substation as an example to analysis the protection method of main relay protection and backup relay protection of station element, and boundary element. Station centralized mode is a comprehensive reform of the relay protection, and make some protection function run on a device to be convenient for the analysis of fault behavior, the station information system sharing, and conducive to the comprehensive judgement. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of the conventional model programs and station centralized model. Take HongXing110kV substation as an example to analysis the actual application of digital substation.
