Bridge deck pavement’s durability is a key and difficult technology in the construction oflong-span steel bridge. Waterproof and cohesive layer is one of the major measures to ensurethe durability of the bridge. Some reasearchers even pointed out that the shear failure of thewaterproof and cohesive layer is the fundermental cause for the damage of the bridge deck.Therefore, a compensive and systematic study on the detection technology of the bondingstrength between the bridge deck and asphalt paving layer is of great significance. Howeverthe existing detection methods are maily destructive, which can not be used in actual steelbridge, then we can’t know the actual bonding strength. So, it is necessary to find out theapplicability of non-destructive testing technology.Ultrasonic time-domain reflectometry (UTDR) technique was chosen in this paper, andsome experiments were done from the steel plate. The main work are as follows:(1) Theapplication of four kinds of waveforms were analyzed, longitudinal wave was chosen to dothe experiments;(2) Experiments on the steel plate using the common frequency (0.5-10MHz)probe were done, the5MHz probe was chose to do the experiments;(3) The test model wassimplified and three defect interfaces were made according to the acoustic boundaryconditions and engineering experience;(4) Attenuation index and envelope area of the echoedwave were used to distinguish different interfaces according to acoustic parameters, acousticknowledge and tests for selecting the optimal probe;(5) The average value of attenuation andenvelope area of the echoed wave of three defect interfaces (the steel-atmosphere interface,the steel-water interface, the steel-soil interface)were given, according to the analysis resultsof the experiments done with the outdoor sample. It demonstrated that this method could beused to distinguish three kinds defect interfaces;(6) The area in which the bonding strengthlooks good was chose, and141points were signed on this area, and then experiments of the141points were done. At last the average value of attenuation index and envelope area of thegood bonding interface were given;(7) The impact of manpower strength in the results wasanalyzed, noting that manpower strength was not the direct cause affecting the results, and theprecautions of follow-up experiments were given;(8) The distribution map of the compare experiments between the non-destructive testing methods and the destructive testing methodswere given for the follow-up experiments.
