Studies on community spatial environment has began early after World War Two.However, studies at home and abroad mainly concentrates on the following aspects: function,scale, admeasurement, form, under surface and material of the space. On the other hand, whenit refers to the satisfaction of communication needs and the enhancement of neighboringrelationship, researches of community design at home and abroad not focuses on the positiveeffects which the shared space has on the enhancement of neighboring relationship and theformation of communication system but on the communication space.When it comes to the exploration of shared space, the single building only discusses theatrium space in the building, which is a traditional form of shared space. Only a few papershave mentioned the outdoor environment, not to mention to organize, analyze and summarizeof the various types of shared space which have absent in modern architecture andenvironment design. In the research of public environment in community, scholars pay muchattention to the studies of communication space, which more studies have been achieved inthis field.This thesis mainly concentrates on the outer space of the community as well as routineacts of residents. By analyzing the concept, character, and meaning of the community sharedspace, the author tries to summarize various types and designing principles of the sharedspace, which is prevalent in the present communities, with the help of exploration of thecurrent situation of shared space which exist in Xi’an, characterized by the typical outdoorand semi.outdoor. Suggestions of alteration and design would also be given in this thesis. Thisthesis aims to optimize the utility of shared space in community and the promotion of theneighboring relationship.
